Srinagar: With the annual Amarnath Yatra set to commence on July 3, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have intensified security and logistical preparations to ensure the smooth conduct of one of India's largest religious pilgrimages. A comprehensive three-tier security system is being put in place across all base camps and along the entire pilgrimage route.

As part of the security arrangements, anti-sabotage teams, bomb disposal squads, dog squads of Anantnag Police and personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted extensive sanitisation and search operations at the Nunwan and Bhagwati Nagar base camps.

In a major security deployment, 670 companies of security personnel will be stationed across the Yatra route and associated facilities. For the first time, the Army's newly raised Vikas Battalion, comprising troops trained in mountain warfare, will be deployed to secure strategic heights overlooking the Pahalgam route.

Authorities are also conducting emergency preparedness drills ahead of the pilgrimage. Pulwama Police recently carried out mock exercises to test response mechanisms, while the CRPF has prepared specialised mountain rescue teams for the Baltal axis to assist pilgrims in difficult terrain.

High-Tech Surveillance Network

The Amarnath Shrine Board and the Jammu and Kashmir administration have completed preparations at the Srinagar transit camp to welcome devotees. Security bunkers have been established and personnel deployed throughout the area.

This year, authorities are relying heavily on advanced surveillance technology. Facial recognition cameras have been installed at key locations to help identify suspected terrorists and Over Ground Workers (OGWs). In addition, drones and CCTV cameras will monitor the entire pilgrimage route and transit camps in real time.

Amit Shah Reviews Security Arrangements

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently chaired a high-level review meeting to assess security and operational preparedness for the pilgrimage. The meeting was attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, CRPF Director General GP Singh and other senior officials.

Given the history of terror threats targeting the Amarnath Yatra, authorities are implementing extensive security and logistical measures to ensure the safe movement of lakhs of pilgrims expected to undertake the sacred journey to the holy cave shrine of Lord Shiva.

The 57-day Amarnath Yatra 2026 will begin on July 3 and conclude on August 28, with pilgrims travelling through the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter Baltal route.
