Assam Floods: 21 killed, Several Stucked (Img: X)
New Delhi: The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Wednesday, with 21 people losing their lives in the last 24 hours. According to the reports, more than 5.64 lakh people have been affected across 16 districts.
The fatalities have pushed this year's flood-related death toll in the state to 31, highlighting the scale of the disaster.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to visit several of the worst-affected districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar, Nazira, Sonari, Jorhat and Teok. During the visit, he will assess relief camps, review rescue operations and interact with affected residents. The state government has attributed the worsening floods to heavy upstream rainfall and cloudburst-related water inflows.
Floodwaters have submerged 872 villages spread across 44 revenue circles. Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district, accounting for the highest number of affected residents, followed by Jorhat and Charaideo. Authorities have set up 71 relief camps sheltering over 12,000 displaced people, while more than 200 relief distribution centres are supplying essential items.
The Indian Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Fire and Emergency Services are jointly carrying out rescue and relief operations. Meanwhile, train services in parts of Upper Assam continue to face disruptions for the second consecutive day after railway tracks were submerged. Several trains have been cancelled, diverted or short-terminated, while special services are being operated to assist stranded passengers.
To ensure uninterrupted communication in flood-hit districts, the Department of Telecommunications has activated the Intra-Circle Roaming (ICR) facility until July 24, allowing mobile users to connect through any available telecom network during service disruptions.
