Bengaluru: An FIR has been filed against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in connection with the stampede that happened yesterday outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. According to the Dynamite News correspondent, the FIR has been filed at the Cubbon Park Police Station, and the action has been taken after 24 hours of the incident.
The FIR alleges criminal negligence against RCB, DNA (event management company), and the Karnataka Cricket Association. It has made serious allegations like Sections 105, 125 (1) (2), 132, 121/1, and 190 r/w 3 (5) for alleged negligence and culpability in the stampede incident.
After RCB won their first IPL title, it was announced that a victory parade would be organized on June 3, 2025. Crowds started gathering outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium from the morning of June 4. The police did not allow the Victory Parade to be held and canceled it after noticing that the crowd was getting too large.
The police also requested to postpone the celebrations to be held at the stadium, as they believed that the team had won the trophy a day before and people were very excited, which could worsen the situation.
RCB, however, wished to hold the event on June 4 itself, as their overseas players were due to return to their country soon. The police had suggested that the event be held on June 8, 2025, but RCB held the event on June 4 instead.
Following the incident, Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh said that notices would be issued to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), RCB, and Police Commissioner B. Dayanand to investigate the stampede incident.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of the stampede incident, in which 11 people died and more than 50 were injured. The NHRC has sent a notice to the district administration and police seeking a report within a week. The commission has alleged that the crowd management by the authorities was poor.
What is surprising is that despite the tragedy and bodies lying outside the stadium, celebrations and festivities continued inside the stadium. The NHRC has demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter and requested compensation and justice for the victims.
