New Delhi: If you have urgent banking tasks planned for the second week of May, take note. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released its official holiday calendar, and several bank branches will remain closed on select days. Customers are advised to complete essential transactions beforehand to avoid any inconvenience.

Bank Closures Next Week

May 9 (Saturday): Banks in Kolkata will remain closed in observance of Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti. Across the rest of the country, banks will operate as usual.
May 10 (Sunday): All banks nationwide will remain closed for the weekly holiday.

Total Bank Holidays in May

The RBI has scheduled six bank holidays for the month:

  • All Sundays
  • The second and fourth Saturdays

Banks generally remain open on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays, unless a regional or national holiday is observed.

Regional Variations in Bank Holidays

Bank holidays in India can vary from state to state due to local festivals and traditions. Customers should check the holiday schedule with their nearest branch or refer to the RBI’s official list to confirm specific closures in their region.

About Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti

Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti, also called Rabindra Jayanti or Pochishe Boishakh, celebrates the birth anniversary of the legendary poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. While it usually falls on May 7, this year it is observed on May 9, leading to bank closures in Kolkata.

Digital Banking Services Remain Active

Even when branches are closed, online banking services will continue to operate, including:

  • UPI transactions
  • Mobile and Internet banking
  • NEFT and RTGS transfers
  • Applications for chequebooks and cards

However, occasional technical maintenance may temporarily affect these services, so users should stay alert for bank notifications.

Customer Advisory

To avoid last-minute rushes and potential delays, customers are encouraged to plan their essential financial transactions in advance, keeping the RBI’s holiday schedule in mind.
