New Delhi: The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 has been introduced in Parliament to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. The Bill seeks to officially name Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 was enacted to manage the bifurcation of the state into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. As per the Act, Hyderabad was designated as the common capital for both states for a maximum period of ten years, after which Andhra Pradesh was to have a new capital.
Following the bifurcation, the Andhra Pradesh government identified Amaravati as its capital after extensive planning and consultations. However, the original Act did not explicitly name the capital, creating a need for statutory clarity.
The Bill proposes to amend Section 5 of the 2014 Act by replacing the phrase “there shall be a new capital” with “Amaravati shall be the new capital.”
It also expands the definition of Amaravati to include areas notified under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014.
The amendment will be effective from June 2, 2024. This ensures that Amaravati’s status as the capital is recognized from the date marking the end of Hyderabad’s role as the common capital.
The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on March 28, 2026, requesting the Centre to amend the law and formally recognise Amaravati as the state capital.
