Congress marks 140th Foundation Day with Flag hoisting at Indira Bhavan

The Congress President asserted that the Congress will always work for the India envisioned by its founders. He said that under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the poor and farmers continuously fought.

New Delhi: The Congress today marked its 140th Foundation Day with a flag-hoisting ceremony at Indira Bhawan here in New Delhi. Partys top leadership, including Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and several other senior leaders were there in attendance on the occasion.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the National President of the Party, hoisted the National Flag at Indira Bhavan. Addressing the gathering, Kharge extended his greetings to the people of the country and highlighted the Party's history and ideals.

Kharge emphasized the contributions of the Congress in the Freedom Struggle. He said that the Indian National Congress has always worked for the welfare, empowerment, and inclusive development of the people of India.

Kharge said that the Congress was founded in Mumbai on 28 December 1885. He said that for the past so many years, millions of Congress workers have struggled for the country, gone to jail, and fought for freedom, which ultimately led to India's independence.

Tributes To Party Founders And Freedom Fighters

On this occasion tributes were paid to the founders of the Congress Party and the Freedom Fighters by all the leaders present.

The Congress President asserted that the Congress will always work for the India envisioned by its founders. He said that under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the poor and farmers continuously fought, and today the Constitution and democracy are under threat. He further added that Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi sacrificed their lives for the unity, integrity, and secularism of the country.

In Delhi, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge said that under the chairmanship of Sonia Gandhi, the Congress and the UPA government strengthened the protection of people's rights. Kharge mentioned that when Dr. Manmohan Singh was Prime Minister, important laws such as the Right to Information (RTI), Right to Education (RTE), Food Security Act, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), Forest Rights Act, and Land Acquisition Act were enacted. Kharge said that in the last 11 years, the Modi government has weakened the institutions built by the Congress. He alleged that RSS-BJP leaders are disrespecting the national flag, the Constitution, the Ashoka Chakra, and Vande Mataram. Kharge further stated that the current government is suppressing people's rights, has no connection to the freedom struggle, and is snatching away the rights of the people today.

Congress's 140th Foundation Day
It is noteworthy that the Indian National Congress was founded on December 28, 1885, in Mumbai. The party was formed at the Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in the presence of 72 representatives. Its founding general secretary was A.O. Hume, and Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee was appointed as the president. On this foundation day, the party reiterated its ideals and message of patriotism and extended its best wishes to all countrymen.
