New Delhi: Cyclone Montha is rapidly intensifying and is expected to make landfall near Kakinada on the Andhra Pradesh coast. State governments have issued alerts for immediate rescue operations, heavy rainfall, and strong winds in coastal areas.

Intensity and Potential Impact of Montha

The Meteorological Department has warned that Cyclone Montha will make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh this evening or night.

Wind speeds could reach 90-100 kilometers per hour at the time of landfall. Heavy rainfall is expected in several areas of Andhra and Odisha during this period. The torrential rains and strong winds could affect crops, trees, and weak structures.

Orange and Yellow Alerts in Andhra Pradesh

IMD Hyderabad officials stated that an orange alert has been issued for Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Mulugu districts, while a yellow alert has been issued for the remaining northeastern districts. This means that a higher level of caution is required in these districts.

Chief Minister Naidu's Instructions

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has instructed officials to immediately evacuate people from coastal areas to relief centers. Clean water, adequate food, and special officers will be ensured at the relief centers.

District collectors have been asked to monitor tanks and canals to prevent waterlogging.

Odisha's Preparations

The Odisha government has deployed 123 fire units and declared eight districts as red zones. Rescue teams have boats, rafts, and generators available. Additional teams have been sent to Gajapati and Ganjam districts due to the fear of landslides.

NDRF and SDRF Deployment
