New Delhi: A century-old mosque near the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi is facing eviction following a notice issued by authorities while the ongoing demolition drive has also disrupted essential services for families living in the surrounding area.
The historic Race Course Mosque in New Delhi was served an eviction notice around October 19, directing its management to vacate the premises within six days. The notice states that the land falls under the Union government’s Land and Development Office (L&DO) and alleges unauthorised occupation and construction.

The development comes amid a demolition drive in the Race Course Road area with officials of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) confirming that the impact extends beyond the religious structure to nearby residential properties.
According to the report , water and electricity connections at several properties, including the mosque have been disrupted following directions from the L&DO as part of the ongoing action.
However , Delhi Waqf Board has requested protection of the Race Course mosque after its electricity and water connections were disconnected . The mosque’s water and electricity connections had reportedly been cut off on October 7.
According to the source , the demolition drive was being carried out under a court order with multiple properties affected by the disconnection of essential services.
The disruption has added to concerns among residents as authorities proceed with the clearance operation in the locality.
The demolition drive is expected to affect nearly 700 families in the Race Course Road area. The residents had been asked to vacate their properties and that alternative accommodation had been provided a few kilometres away.
The situation has also raised questions about the future of the historic mosque, which predates India’s Independence and is listed as a Grade-II heritage structure on the NDMC’s heritage list.
While the mosque’s heritage status recognises its historical significance, the L&DO maintains that the structure stands on government owned land and regards it as an encroachment.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding its future, prayers were reportedly held at the mosque on Tuesday.
