Durgapur: The alleged gang rape of an MBBS student in Durgapur, West Bengal, has shaken both the state's political and social landscape.

Days after the incident, the victim's father's statement became a topic of discussion in the media—especially because just two days earlier, he had criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, but now he has apologized and described her as "like a mother."

Father's stance toward Mamata Banerjee softens

On Wednesday, the victim's father told the media that he had said some things in the heat of the moment, which may have been inappropriate. He said, "Mamata Banerjee is like a mother to me. If I said anything wrong, I apologize. I will bow at her feet; I just want justice for my daughter."

This statement made it clear that the anger he had previously expressed against the Chief Minister had now been replaced by a humble appeal.

In fact, two days earlier, he had expressed displeasure over Mamata Banerjee's comment that "women should not go out late at night." This statement drew criticism across the state, as people viewed it as "victim blaming."

Father's Concern—Justice and Daughter's Safety

The father says he no longer feels safe in West Bengal. Therefore, he indicated that as soon as doctors declare his daughter completely healthy, he will take her back to his home in Odisha.

Mamata Banerjee clarified that her words were misreported.

He stated that he is demanding a CBI inquiry to ensure a fair investigation of the case. However, he added that the final decision will rest with the state government.

Investigation and Arrests So Far

Police have so far arrested six people in connection with this horrific incident, including a friend of the victim. The incident reportedly occurred on the night of October 10, when the victim was out with her friend to eat outside the medical college when she was allegedly gang-raped.

Political and Social Reaction

This case has become sensitive not only from a law and order perspective but also politically. Opposition parties have accused the Mamata Banerjee government of "failing to protect women." Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has directed the police to take strict action.

The entire episode is a reminder of how influential political statements can be in sensitive matters. The victim's father's appeal for an "apology" from Mamata Banerjee indicates that his primary objective now is to secure justice for his daughter.

However, his words also reveal his deep concern for the safety of his family. This case not only raises questions about the law and order situation in Bengal but also raises serious debate about the safety and attitudes toward women in society.
