At the centenary celebrations of IIT Dhanbad, Dr P.K. Mishra emphasized the institute’s pivotal role in shaping India’s future in science, technology, critical minerals, and innovation, asking how academia can fuel the nation’s journey to Viksit Bharat 2047.

Dhanbad: Dr P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, inaugurated the Centenary Foundation Week at IIT Dhanbad, highlighting the institution’s century-long contributions to mining, energy, earth sciences, and applied engineering. Recognizing the institute as a pioneer in Asia for mining education, he said its expertise has shaped national standards in mine safety, coal exploration, oil and gas, and mineral beneficiation.
“A centenary is not merely a milestone, but a reminder of what sustained commitment can achieve when knowledge is used as a public good,” Dr Mishra said, urging the institute to advance India’s long-term goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
Dr Mishra outlined the Prime Minister’s vision for a Viksit Bharat, emphasizing economic growth, women-led development, and an inclusive, corruption-free society. Despite global turbulence from pandemics, trade conflicts, and climate challenges, India’s economy remains strong with a GDP growth of 8.2 percent in the current financial quarter.
He described the government’s approach as rooted in innovation, competitiveness, and technology-led solutions, with a focus on meeting global challenges and delivering results to citizens.
Highlighting India’s rise as a global innovation hub, Dr Mishra noted that the country now hosts over 100 unicorns and more than 2 lakh startups. He pointed to initiatives such as the Anusandhan National Research Fund, the IndiaAI Mission, and the Deep Tech Fund of Funds as crucial steps to support transformative research and build a future-ready ecosystem.
Platforms like Aadhaar, CoWIN, and the National Digital Education Architecture were cited as examples of how technology can enable inclusive, efficient, and citizen-centric governance.

Dr Mishra called India a Vishwa Bandhu, a trusted partner for nations across the Global South, blending modern capability with civilizational wisdom. He also highlighted India’s advances in frontier sectors, including space missions like Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1, renewable energy surpassing 200 GW, National Green Hydrogen Mission, and the Deep Ocean Mission.

Focusing on IIT Dhanbad’s unique role, he emphasized its designation as a Centre of Excellence under the National Critical Mineral Mission. The institute is expected to lead India’s strategy in climate, minerals, energy transition, materials, and advanced manufacturing while keeping research aligned with public interest.
Dr Mishra stressed that technical skill alone is insufficient. Students must develop teamwork, ethics, humility, and a positive attitude to contribute effectively to national priorities. He highlighted that the alignment of institutional strengths with India 2047 goals will define the nation’s progress in knowledge, technology, and human capital.
Concluding his address, Dr Mishra expressed optimism about India’s future, noting that IIT Dhanbad enters its second century at a moment of clear long-term direction and purpose. He urged the faculty, students, and alumni to leverage the institute’s legacy in building a capable, innovative, and equitable nation, contributing meaningfully to the Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
