INDIA bloc leaders to meet President Droupadi Murmu
New Delhi: The INDIA bloc’s campaign against the Election Commission took a fresh turn on Friday after Rashtrapati Bhavan reportedly gave opposition leaders an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu for 8 PM. The delegation is seeking to raise concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demand action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The development comes as opposition leaders continue demonstrations in New Delhi, alleging irregularities in the voter-list revision process and raising concerns about the deletion of eligible voters’ names. These allegations have been disputed amid a wider political debate over the exercise.
Opposition leaders want to present their concerns directly to President Murmu and seek her intervention over what they describe as threats to electoral transparency and voting rights.
The INDIA bloc has also demanded Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, alleging that the Election Commission’s handling of the SIR exercise has undermined public confidence in the electoral process.
Congress leaders had earlier said that the opposition had requested an appointment with the President and was awaiting a response from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The meeting request comes amid a series of protests by opposition MPs in Delhi. On Thursday, INDIA bloc leaders gathered at Rajghat and observed a period of silence as part of their campaign against the Election Commission.
The opposition has indicated that its agitation will continue until its concerns are addressed. Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders have reiterated their commitment to raising questions about electoral rolls and the protection of voting rights.
The scheduled meeting could provide opposition leaders an opportunity to formally submit their concerns to the President. However, the outcome will depend on the discussions and any subsequent response from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The dispute over SIR has become a major political flashpoint, with the opposition questioning the process and the Election Commission maintaining that its decisions follow established legal procedures.
