New Delhi: The political confrontation between the INDIA bloc and the Election Commission of India (ECI) intensified on Wednesday after opposition parties announced a multi-level campaign, including a nationwide “Save Democracy March” and a planned meeting with the President of India over their concerns regarding electoral processes, voter lists and institutional accountability.
The decision was announced after a high-level INDIA bloc coordination meeting held in the national capital, where leaders of opposition parties discussed a collective strategy to raise issues linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, transparency in election management and the functioning of constitutional institutions.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the opposition alliance would approach the President in the second week of October to submit a detailed representation on what it described as concerns affecting democratic processes and electoral safeguards.
The opposition bloc also announced a week-long “Save Democracy March” from October 2 to October 8, with district-level programmes planned across the country. The campaign is expected to involve INDIA bloc parties, civil society groups and other organisations supporting demands related to electoral transparency.

The INDIA bloc’s latest move marks an escalation in its political campaign against the Election Commission, with opposition parties seeking to build public momentum through street mobilisation, institutional outreach and parliamentary pressure.
As part of the campaign, opposition MPs are scheduled to march towards the Election Commission on October 6. The proposed demonstration is expected to focus on issues including electoral roll revisions, voter inclusion, transparency in the election process and the credibility of democratic institutions.
The opposition alliance had earlier planned a similar march but decided to defer it to ensure wider participation from MPs and alliance partners.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has emerged as the central point of contention between opposition parties and the Election Commission.
INDIA bloc leaders have raised concerns over voter deletions, verification procedures and the possibility of eligible citizens facing difficulties during the revision exercise. The alliance has demanded greater transparency in electoral roll management, including detailed information on additions, deletions and corrections.
The Election Commission has maintained that electoral roll revision exercises are conducted through established legal and administrative procedures aimed at ensuring accurate voter lists.
The dispute has now transformed into a larger political debate over electoral reforms, institutional independence and public confidence in the election process.
Apart from street-level mobilisation, the INDIA bloc plans to seek an appointment with the President of India in October to formally present its concerns.
The opposition alliance is expected to highlight issues related to electoral transparency, voter registration mechanisms, Election Commission functioning and safeguards for citizens’ voting rights.
The move reflects the opposition’s strategy of combining political protests with constitutional outreach as it seeks to bring attention to its concerns regarding the electoral framework.
During the meeting, INDIA bloc leaders also reiterated their demand for reforms in the voting system, including their call for a return to ballot paper voting.
Opposition parties have argued that such a step would help strengthen voter confidence in the electoral process. The Election Commission, however, has maintained that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are secure, reliable and supported by multiple technical and procedural safeguards.
The EVM debate has remained one of the most prominent political issues in India’s election discourse, with parties divided over the issue.
Addressing the media after the INDIA bloc meeting, Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the functioning of the Election Commission and accused the institution of failing to adequately address opposition concerns regarding electoral processes.
He alleged that recent decisions related to voter lists and election procedures had raised questions about transparency and accountability.
The BJP and Election Commission have rejected allegations of electoral irregularities and have maintained that India’s election system functions independently under constitutional provisions.
The INDIA bloc has outlined a series of demands, including complete transparency during electoral roll revisions, disclosure of voter deletions, prior notice before removing names from voter lists, an effective appeal mechanism and easier registration procedures for young and first-time voters.
The alliance has also demanded stronger institutional accountability measures and reforms aimed at improving public trust in the electoral system.
