New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against the wife of a senior Army officer for allegedly sharing sensitive information with operatives linked to foreign intelligence agencies, including China. The suspected operatives allegedly approached her while posing as academicians.
The woman, a Telangana resident currently living in the jurisdiction of Gandhi Nagar Police Station in Jammu, is suspected of having been drawn into the alleged operation without realising that her contacts were intelligence operatives rather than academics.
An FIR has been registered at Gandhi Nagar Police Station as FIR No. 290/2026 under Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, along with Sections 152 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Section 3 of the Official Secrets Act covers offences involving the collection or communication of information prejudicial to national security. Section 5 deals with the wrongful communication, retention or handling of protected information.
According to a preliminary investigation by intelligence agencies, some Chinese operatives allegedly contacted the woman while posing as academicians and asked her to write articles and other material on subjects of strategic and operational significance.
Investigators suspect that she was initially encouraged to write about environmental issues and geopolitics before being gradually steered towards defence-related subjects.
The woman is suspected of having fallen into what investigators describe as an “intellectual trap”, allegedly unaware that those approaching her as academics were trying to obtain sensitive information.
Sources said the woman came under scrutiny after intelligence agencies received information from a reliable source alleging her involvement in the clandestine collection, possession and transmission of sensitive documents, photographs and electronic data with potential implications for national security.
The information reportedly suggested that such material may have been shared through encrypted communication channels with individuals linked to foreign intelligence agencies.
The police input specifically refers to China and other foreign countries, alleging that the suspected activity may have exposed information of strategic importance, whether knowingly or unknowingly.
However, the investigation is still under way, and authorities have not disclosed the precise nature of the documents allegedly collected, the identities of the suspected foreign contacts or the extent of any information transfer.
Police have also not released details about the alleged communications, any material recovered or whether searches have been conducted. Investigators are now working to establish how the woman came into contact with the suspected foreign operatives.
