Srinagar: A decade has passed since the deadly terror attack on an Indian Army camp in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, but the memories of September 18, 2016, remain deeply etched in the nation’s consciousness.
The attack, which claimed the lives of 19 Indian Army soldiers, triggered widespread grief across the country and became a defining moment in India’s national security journey. Ten years later, the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice are being remembered, while the military response that followed continues to remain a significant chapter in India’s fight against terrorism.

On September 18, 2016, four heavily armed terrorists attacked an Indian Army administrative base near Uri in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. The attack took place in the early morning hours when soldiers were stationed at temporary shelters inside the camp.
According to official accounts, the attackers used automatic weapons and incendiary ammunition, which caused fires inside the camp and increased the scale of destruction.
The security operation continued for several hours, during which all four terrorists involved in the attack were neutralised. Security forces recovered weapons and military equipment from the attackers, including AK-47 rifles, under-barrel grenade launchers and other war-like stores.
The attack resulted in the loss of 19 Army personnel, leaving behind families who lost their sons, husbands, fathers and brothers while serving the nation.
The 19 soldiers lost in Uri were not just numbers in an official report. Each soldier represented a family, a lifetime of memories and a commitment to protect the country. The Uri attack led to a multi-level response from India involving diplomatic, strategic and military measures. The government intensified efforts to highlight cross-border terrorism at international forums and focused on building global pressure against terror networks.
India also decided not to participate in the SAARC Summit scheduled in Islamabad after the attack, while several other countries also withdrew, leading to the postponement of the summit. New Delhi further strengthened its diplomatic campaign against terrorism financing and support systems at global platforms.
The attack also triggered a review of India’s security approach and raised questions about how future terror threats originating across the Line of Control should be addressed.
Eleven days after the Uri attack, India announced a major military operation across the Line of Control. On the night of September 28-29, 2016, Indian Army Special Forces carried out surgical strikes targeting terrorist launch pads across the LoC.
According to the Directorate General of Military Operations, the operation was based on specific intelligence inputs about terrorist groups preparing infiltration attempts into Jammu and Kashmir. The objective was to target terror infrastructure and prevent planned attacks against India.
The public announcement of the operation marked a significant moment in India’s counter-terror strategy. It demonstrated India’s stated ability to conduct targeted operations against identified threats beyond the immediate area of attack.
The Uri attack became a major reference point in discussions around national security and counter-terror preparedness. The incident highlighted the challenges faced by security forces guarding sensitive areas along the Line of Control and the importance of intelligence coordination, surveillance and rapid response capabilities.
