New Delhi: If you are a Jan Dhan account holder, then you should do some things before it's too late. The Central Government has asked the Government banks that the accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, if they are not being used for a long time. If the beneficiary does not want to continue the account, then they should be closed, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
The government has received information that there are many Jan Dhan accounts which are being used as mule accounts. It means their account is being used for fraud and money laundering. Due to this, cases of cyber fraud and cheating are increasing.
The government has directed to close all those accounts in which there has been no transaction in the last 24 months. Apart from this, the government has also directed to do the re-KYC process again to activate the inactive accounts. In such a situation, if the beneficiaries do not appear willing to keep the accounts active, then they will be closed. A bank account is considered inactive when there is no transaction process for a period of 24 consecutive months.
People associated with government banks said that most of the inactive Jan Dhan accounts are from rural areas, but the bank is doing the process of re-KYC to restart these accounts. If the beneficiaries do not want to use their account, they will be closed. Recently it has been seen that Jan Dhan accounts are being used as mule accounts. Due to this, incidents of fraud have increased significantly.
The Reserve Bank of India has started an initiative called Mule Hunter to detect such accounts. This is an AI / ML based model developed by the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub, which is designed to help banks identify mule accounts, as cyber criminals use such accounts to keep the money obtained through fraud. According to Reserve Bank data, 13,516 fraud cases were reported in the digital payment category in FY25 and most of these cases were related to banking. The share of these frauds in the total cases was 56.5 per cent, involving Rs 520 crore.
As of June 25, 55.7 crore accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. A total of Rs 2.60 lakh crore is deposited in these accounts. Out of about 55.7 crore accounts, 31.06 crore accounts belong to women beneficiaries. Of the total accounts opened, more than 37 crore accounts are in rural and town bank branches while 18.53 crore branches are in metros.
