New Delhi: President’s Rule in Manipur, which had been in force since February last year, was lifted on Wednesday, paving the way for the formation of a new elected government in the state. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a notification confirming that President’s Rule has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

Soon after the announcement, NDA leader Y Khemchand Singh met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan and formally staked a claim to form the new government.

NDA Meets Governor

BJP Manipur unit president A. Sharda Devi said an NDA delegation led by Khemchand Singh called on the Governor to present its claim. BJP central observer Tarun Chugh was also present during the meeting.

The delegation included MLAs from Kuki-dominated districts, including Churachandpur and Pherzawl, signalling broader regional representation as the alliance moves to form the government.

Background of President’s Rule

President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13 last year following prolonged ethnic unrest and a breakdown of the law-and-order situation. The crisis led to the resignation of then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, after which the state was placed under central administration.

Challenges Ahead

With the revocation of President’s Rule, expectations have risen among citizens for the restoration of peace and political stability in the violence-hit state. The 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly, whose term runs until 2027, will now resume its full constitutional role.

The new government faces the immediate challenge of rebuilding trust, restoring normalcy, and addressing long-standing ethnic tensions that have affected large parts of the state over the past year.
