Srinagar: Political temperatures have risen in Jammu and Kashmir after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened a meeting of National Conference (NC) legislators on June 3, prompting opposition parties to question the stability of the government.

The meeting has sparked intense speculation, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging growing discontent within the ruling party and suggesting that the Omar Abdullah-led administration could face political challenges in the coming days.

BJP Claims Government Facing Internal Dissent

Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma and senior BJP leader Altaf Thakur claimed the June 3 gathering is an attempt to contain dissatisfaction among National Conference legislators.

Speaking to media outlets, Thakur alleged that several ruling party MLAs were unhappy with the government's functioning and that previous efforts to address their concerns had failed.

"This appears to be the last effort to convince dissatisfied legislators and keep the government intact. The political situation may become clearer after the June 3 meeting," he said.

Apni Party Sees Signs of Discontent

Senior Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party leader Muntazir Mehdi echoed concerns about unrest within the National Conference, claiming that some legislators were frustrated over what they viewed as the government's failure to meet public expectations.

According to Mehdi, the meeting is likely aimed at addressing internal grievances and preventing any potential rebellion within the party ranks.

He also suggested that NC president Farooq Abdullah would play a key role in maintaining party unity and ensuring the government completes its full term.

Omar Abdullah Dismisses Speculation

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly rejected the opposition's claims and responded through social media platform X.

"I find it amusing that those who know the least about the meeting I have called with my MLAs are the ones speaking the most about it. Those who know do not speak, and those who speak are sitting in the opposition," he wrote.

His remarks were widely interpreted as a direct rebuttal to BJP leaders predicting instability within the ruling alliance.

National Conference Rejects Crisis Narrative

National Conference leaders have dismissed the opposition's allegations as politically motivated.

NC MP Ramzan Chaudhary said the party remains united and accused the BJP of attempting to create an impression of instability.

"The National Conference cannot be broken. Our government is strong and secure. Similar attempts have been made in the past and have failed," he said.

NC MLA Salman Sagar described the June 3 meeting as a routine organisational exercise and expressed confidence that the government would complete its five-year tenure.

"The National Conference has overcome far greater political challenges over the past century. The party remains united behind Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah," he said.

Assembly Arithmetic Remains Crucial

The debate over the government's stability has also brought attention to the composition of the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly following the 2024 elections:

  • Jammu & Kashmir National Conference: 42 seats
  • Bharatiya Janata Party: 29 seats
  • Indian National Congress: 6 seats
  • People's Democratic Party: 3 seats
  • Communist Party of India (Marxist): 1 seat
  • Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference: 1 seat
  • Aam Aadmi Party: 1 seat
  • Independents: 7 seats

All Eyes on June 3

While opposition parties continue to predict turbulence within the ruling camp, National Conference leaders insist the government remains stable.

The June 3 legislative party meeting is now being closely watched, as it could provide a clearer picture of the political mood within the ruling party and determine whether the current speculation is based on genuine concerns or political posturing.

For now, the Omar Abdullah government remains in office with its allies, but the outcome of the meeting is expected to shape the next phase of Jammu and Kashmir's political discourse.
