Imphal/Guwahati: A TV journalist was attacked in Senapati district of Manipur on Saturday evening when he was returning from a program. Deep Saikia, a journalist associated with 'Hornbill TV', was shot in the hands and feet. After the incident, he was immediately taken to Senapati District Hospital for treatment, from where he was referred to a private hospital in Dimapur, Nagaland when his condition became critical.

Zinnia Flower Festival

Deep Saikia is a resident of Jorhat in Assam and had come to cover the 'Zinnia Flower Festival' organized in the Naga-dominated Lai village. When he was returning with his four other companions, an attacker opened fire on him after stopping the car on the way. According to Saikia, the first bullet hit his right leg and a few seconds later the second bullet hit his right hand. Only Saikia was targeted in the attack.

Attacker Caught

Due to the alertness of the local people, the attacker was caught and handed over to the police. An air gun has been recovered from him. The police are investigating the motive behind the attack. The injured Sakia said that he had received death threats earlier as well, which he has informed the police about. He said that he does not want to name anyone but hopes that the police will conduct an impartial investigation.

Given Sakia's condition, he may be shifted to Guwahati as the bullets have not been removed from his body yet. Strongly condemning the incident, the Naga Journalists Union Manipur (NUJM) has formed an inquiry committee.

Nagaland Deputy CM Yanthungo Patton

It is worth noting that recently Nagaland Deputy CM Yanthungo Patton had criticized Sakia over a report which was based on administrative inaction in the state. 'Hornbill TV' editor Juthono Macro called the attack an attack on press freedom and demanded an impartial investigation.
