Ex-CJI Dr DY Chandrachud stresses a vegan diet; Asserts ‘ahimsa’ is our tradition

Mumbai: Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr DY Chandrachud asserted that as 'ahimsa' is our Indian tradition, it is imperative that we should follow vegan diet. Dr Chandrachud was speaking after inaugurating the Fourth Vegan India Conference here in Mumbai on Saturday, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Dr Chandrachud, while addressing the august audience at the Conference, outlined his tremendous journey in adopting a vegan lifestyle.

He highlighted the Indian tradition of 'ahimsa' which is also recognized as a Fundamental Duty in Article 51A(g) of the Constitution. He said that this tradition 'ahimsa' impels us to adopt an ethical and sustainable lifestyle.

Ex-CJI Dr Chandrachud underline the value of a plant based diet as a safeguard against many ailments including cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and some cancers.

Extending the credit of his vegan diet to his daughters Mahi and Priyanka and his wife Kalpana, Dr Chandrachud said, 'My evolution to a vegan diet and lifestyle has been inspired by his daughters Mahi and Priyanka and his wife Kalpana.'

What Is A Vegan Diet

A vegan diet focuses on plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. This diet excludes all animal products and byproducts such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and honey.

Vegan Diet Includes:

1. Fruits and vegetables: A wide variety of fresh, frozen, or dried fruits and vegetables.

2. Legumes: Beans, lentils, peas, and products made from them like tofu and tempeh.

3. Nuts and seeds: Almonds, cashews, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and their butters.

4. Grains: Rice, oats, quinoa, bread, pasta, and other grains.

5. Alternatives: Soy milk, almond milk, tofu, tempeh, and other products designed to replace animal-based foods.

6. Supplements: As a vegan you may rely on fortified foods or supplements to ensure they get enough vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, and other nutrients that are more difficult to obtain from a vegan diet.
