New Delhi: A grand ceremony was held at Bharat Mandapam where Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Union Home & Cooperation Minister Amit Shah jointly launched two books authored by Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta — The Bench, the Bar, and the Bizarre and The Lawful and the Awful.

The event witnessed the presence of eminent jurists, senior advocates, legal experts and several distinguished guests from across the country.

Addressing the gathering during the launch event, Amit Shah praised Tushar Mehta’s contribution to the legal fraternity and highlighted the importance of literature that reflects experiences from the judicial and legal system.

He said such books offer valuable insights into the functioning of courts and the legal profession while also presenting unique perspectives drawn from years of courtroom experience.

During his speech, Amit Shah also made a light yet noteworthy remark, saying he would share his thoughts on the legal field at an appropriate forum in the future. “I wish to make that clear today itself. I do not want to create any other headlines on the day of Tushar Mehta ji’s book launch,” Shah said, drawing laughter and applause from the audience.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant remarked, “I often wondered what would happen if the law ever took a detour into a comedy club — and the Solicitor General has answered that brilliantly through The Lawful and The Awful and The Bench, The Bar and The Bizarre. Reading these books feels like watching a courtroom drama seamlessly transform into a stand-up performance.”

Recalling a humorous anecdote from judicial history, CJI Surya Kant said, “There was a British judge, Lord Leach, presiding over proceedings in the Madras High Court. During the course of an advocate’s passionate submissions, a donkey suddenly brayed outside the courtroom. Known for his sharp tongue and stern demeanour, Lord Leach quipped, ‘Gentlemen, one at a time.’ The lawyer, equally quick-witted, chose to remain silent then. Later, as Justice Leach began dictating the judgment, the donkey brayed once again. Seizing the moment, the counsel politely responded, ‘May My Lord kindly repeat the words, as the echo made them unclear?’”
