Kerala: A major controversy erupted just before the commencement of IPL 2026. A petition alleged that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was misusing the name "Indian Premier League." However, the court dismissed this claim, providing significant relief to the BCCI, reports Dynamite News corresponednt.
The Kerala High Court termed the petition entirely baseless. A bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Shyam Kumar VM stated that the petitioner's arguments lacked any solid foundation. The court further remarked that raising such an issue after so many years was incomprehensible.
Ashik Karouth, a resident of Ernakulam, had claimed that the name "Indian Premier League" was inappropriate because it is not an "official" tournament of India. He specifically objected to the use of the word "Indian." However, the court completely rejected this line of reasoning.
The IPL was launched in 2008 and stands today as one of the largest cricket leagues in the world. Its popularity extends not only across India but globally. Consequently, had the dispute over the name escalated, it could have adversely impacted the league's image and the BCCI's reputation.
The opening match of IPL 2026 is scheduled to be played on March 28 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, the full schedule has not yet been released.
The court's verdict makes it clear that there are no legal impediments regarding the name of the IPL. This ruling brings relief to both the BCCI and cricket fans, ensuring that the tournament can now proceed without any controversy.
