New Delhi: This year, different dates have been designated across the country for Eid-ul-Fitr. In most states, Eid will be celebrated on March 21, whereas in Kerala, the festival will be observed on March 20. This distinction stems from a decision based on the sighting of the moon, reports Dynamite News corespondent.

A Decision Contingent on Moon Sighting

The date of Eid is determined according to the Islamic calendar, based on the sighting of the moon. In several parts of the country—including Delhi—the moon was not sighted; consequently, the decision was made to celebrate Eid there on March 21.

Conversely, the sighting of the moon was confirmed in certain regions of Kerala, following which it was announced that Eid would be celebrated there on March 20.

What Do Religious Leaders Say?

The Imam of Delhi's Fatehpuri Masjid stated that inquiries were made across various locations, but the moon remained unsighted. The decision was taken on this very basis.

Additionally, the Naib Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid confirmed that March 20 would mark the final day of fasting (Roza) for Ramadan, and Eid would be celebrated on March 21.

The Significance of Ramadan

This year, the holy month of Ramadan spanned 30 days. During this period, people observe a fast from sunrise to sunset, practicing self-restraint and devotion.

Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated to mark the joyous conclusion of this sacred month.

A Message of Brotherhood

Religious leaders have described Eid as a festival of brotherhood and unity. On this auspicious occasion, prayers have been offered for the promotion of peace, love, and harmony throughout the country.

Why Does Eid Fall on Different Days?

The Islamic calendar is lunar-based; consequently, each month consists of either 29 or 30 days. Due to variations in the timing of the moon's sighting, Eid is celebrated on different days in different geographical locations.
