Mumbai: The legendary Olympia Coffee House in Colaba area of Mumbai has become the subject of a controversy due to the suspension of its food license by the Maharashtra FDA following an inspection carried out by the authorities.
The historical coffee house, famous for its quaint atmosphere and rich history, recently became the centre of attraction after a visit to the coffee house by Hollywood director Christopher Nolan. But now its history seems less relevant than its food safety record.
The Olympia Coffee House is a well-known institution in Mumbai’s culinary scene. Being situated in the bustling Colaba locality, this café has maintained its reputation for being a traditional place with a classic menu.
However, after years of service to the public and having established a good relationship with locals, tourists, and celebrities, this institution now faces the scrutiny of the FDA authorities.
As per reports, there were many concerns raised about the safety of the food at the café by the food safety authorities during their inspection. Some of the concerns mentioned were cleanliness, food-handling procedures, storage and safety standards.
After the inspection was done, the license was suspended and the business told to sort out the issues raised.
The case against Olympia Coffee House is an indication of how serious issues regarding hygiene are becoming among restaurants and coffee shops in the country.
Despite the historical significance of heritage restaurants, it cannot escape the requirements of food safety rules. It now has to sort out the issues brought about by the officials to comply with the required standards.
To a business that has been part of the coffee shop history of Mumbai for many years, this is undoubtedly a hard time for it.
