Odisha: Fire at SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack; 10 Patients Dead

A major fire broke out in the ICU of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, early Monday morning, leaving at least 10 patients dead.

Cuttack: A massive fire broke out at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, early Monday morning. Ten patients have died so far in the blaze, which broke out in the ICU of the hospital's trauma care department. The incident occurred between 2:30 and 3:00 a.m., when critically ill patients were being treated in the ICU. The fire caused panic in the hospital, spreading panic among patients and their families.

Firefighters brought the fire under control

Upon receiving information about the incident, several fire brigade vehicles immediately arrived at the scene. Firefighters quickly launched a rescue and relief operation, and the fire was brought under control shortly afterward. Hospital administration, police personnel, and patients' families also assisted in the rescue efforts. The fire filled the ICU with smoke, causing severe breathing difficulties for patients.

Staff sustained burns while evacuating patients

After the fire broke out, hospital staff attempted to evacuate patients safely. Eleven staff sustained burns during the operation. A total of 23 patients were immediately shifted to other wards and departments. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi stated that seven critical patients died during the shifting process, while three others later succumbed to their injuries during treatment.

Fire suspected to have been caused by short circuit

Upon receiving information about the accident, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling reached the hospital and assessed the situation. They met with the injured patients and their families. Based on preliminary investigations, the Chief Minister stated that a short circuit may have been the cause of the fire. The fire affected the Trauma Care ICU as well as some nearby wards.

₹25 lakh assistance to families of deceased

The Chief Minister expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. The state government has announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh to the families of each deceased. Officials have also been instructed to ensure that no negligence is shown in the treatment of the injured patients. At present, efforts are being made to normalise the situation in the hospital and orders have been given for a detailed investigation of the entire matter.
