Priyanka Gandhi Backs Rahul Gandhi in Parliament Row
New Delhi: A fresh political controversy unfolded in Parliament after Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi made remarks related to China while speaking in the Lok Sabha. Responding to the uproar, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra strongly defended her brother, rejecting claims that his statement disrespected the Indian Army.
She clarified that Rahul Gandhi was merely reading an excerpt from a book written by former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane, and not making any personal allegations against the armed forces.
According to Priyanka Gandhi, there was nothing objectionable in quoting a publicly available source. She argued that parliamentary rules allow references to published material, including books and magazines. Since the excerpt had already been published in a magazine, she questioned why the government was objecting to its mention.

She also accused the Modi government of being “afraid” of open discussion and asked why it was uncomfortable with facts coming from a former Army Chief’s account.
Rahul Gandhi escalated the confrontation by alleging that the government feared the truth coming out. He claimed that revelations from General Naravane’s book would expose the reality behind the government’s strong public posture on China. Using a sharp political phrase, he questioned what had happened to the much-touted “56-inch chest” when it came to standing up to China.

As disruptions continued in the House, the Lok Sabha was adjourned twice and eventually suspended until 11 am the following day. The repeated adjournments reflected the intensity of the standoff between the Opposition and the ruling party.
After the House was adjourned, Rahul Gandhi addressed the media in the Parliament complex. He asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and the entire government were afraid of “one line” that he intended to say in Parliament.

He insisted that no one would be able to stop him from speaking the truth. Later, in a post on social media platform X, he claimed that the former Army Chief’s statement would reveal how the Prime Minister and Defence Minister had let down the armed forces.
The BJP and senior ministers responded sharply to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the ruling party accused him of misleading the House and making unfounded claims.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju went a step further, accusing Rahul Gandhi of questioning the Army and damaging its morale. Rijiju warned that statements lacking verified sources could harm the country’s image and undermine confidence in the armed forces.
The episode has once again highlighted the deep political divide over national security, freedom of speech in Parliament, and accountability. While the Congress insists it is raising legitimate questions based on public sources, the government maintains that such statements risk demoralizing the Army and misleading the nation.
