India’s Parliament begins its Winter Session today, expected to be intense and politically charged. The government plans to introduce 10 significant bills, while the opposition is set to demand discussions on election-related issues, SIR, and accountability in recent controversies.
10 New Bills, Demands for Election Reforms
New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament begins today, and the political temperature has already risen. This is the sixth session of the 18th Lok Sabha, running from December 1st to December 19th. A total of 15 sittings are scheduled, and the government is preparing to introduce 10 important bills during this period. The NDA's victory in the Bihar elections and the debate surrounding electoral reforms have further politicized the session.
The opposition has made it clear that it wants to discuss several sensitive issues especially topics like the election process, vote theft, and the SIR. The opposition claims that open debate on these issues is essential to ensure transparency and fairness in democratic processes. On the other hand, the government is stating its readiness for discussion but is appealing for the session not to be disrupted.
Parliament winter session to be held from 1 to 19 December
The opposition is also preparing to demand answers from the government regarding the November 10th Delhi bombings. These issues are expected to be a source of conflict in the early days of the session.
According to reports, the opposition is preparing to introduce an impeachment motion against Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in this session. The special committee investigating the ongoing impeachment case against Allahabad High Court Judge Yashwant Verma is also expected to present its report during the session. Both these matters are likely to spark heated debate in Parliament.

At the all-party meeting held on Sunday and the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meetings of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the opposition also raised the demand for a comprehensive discussion on electoral reforms. Although the government assured to consider the matter soon, the opposition parties remained adamant on their demand to begin the discussion on the SIR at 2 pm on Monday. Reacting to the government's procrastinating stance, the opposition stated that the government would be responsible for any disruption.

The monsoon session ran from July 21st to August 21st, with 21 sittings. Of the 120 hours of scheduled discussion in the Lok Sabha, only 35 hours were spent, while the Rajya Sabha saw 41 hours. During this period, 12 bills were passed in the Lok Sabha and 15 in the Rajya Sabha. Against this backdrop, better communication is expected in the winter session.
