New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 9th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025 — Asia’s biggest telecom, media, and technology event — at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, on Wednesday. Welcoming delegates and innovators, PM Modi commended startups working on advanced technologies such as 6G, quantum communication, semiconductors, and financial fraud prevention, asserting that the nation’s technological future rests in capable hands.

He remarked that IMC has evolved beyond mobile and telecom, emerging as Asia’s premier digital technology forum, driven by India’s youth and innovation ecosystem.

From 2G Struggles to 5G Success

Highlighting the nation’s digital transformation, PM Modi noted that India, once delayed in adopting technologies like 2G, now boasts 5G coverage in nearly every district. Since 2014, electronics production has grown sixfold, mobile phone manufacturing twenty-eight times, and exports by over 120 times.

He added that the sector has generated millions of direct and indirect jobs, citing a major smartphone company employing 3.5 lakh Indians through its supply chain.

India’s Indigenous 4G and 5G Stack
Calling it a symbol of Atmanirbhar Bharat, PM Modi celebrated the launch of India’s Made-in-India 4G stack, placing the nation among only five countries with such capability. Nearly one lakh 4G towers were activated simultaneously, connecting over two crore people, many in remote regions. The indigenous stack, he said, is export-ready and will play a crucial role in achieving India’s 6G Vision 2030.

PM Modi's view
PM Modi emphasized that technological progress must be backed by a modern legal framework, referencing the new Telecommunications Act, which replaced outdated 19th-century laws. The new act, he noted, acts as a facilitator, streamlining approvals and enabling faster fibre and tower expansion, boosting investment and ease of business.

He also underscored cybersecurity and data protection, stating that stricter laws and improved grievance mechanisms have strengthened public trust.

India: A Global Tech and Investment Hub

PM Modi pointed out that India is now the second-largest telecom and 5G market in the world, with the cheapest data rates globally—“less than a cup of tea.” With a vast, skilled youth population and the world’s fastest-growing developer base, he said India is poised to lead in innovation and digital growth.

Concluding his address, PM Modi urged global investors to capitalize on India’s “best time to invest, innovate, and make in India,” as the nation transforms into a trusted global hub for semiconductors, electronics, and telecom manufacturing.
