Somnath: A remarkable display of devotion and faith was witnessed today at the Somnath Temple, the first Jyotirlinga located on the coast of Saurashtra. On the occasion of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the ritualistic Jalabhishek of Lord Somnath's Jyotirlinga and performed special prayers with Vedic chanting. During this, the temple complex reverberated with chants of "Har Har Mahadev."

First Jyotirlinga: Where Chandradev was freed from the curse

According to mythological beliefs, Somnath holds the first place among the 12 Adi Jyotirlingas. It is also known as Prabhas Tirtha. Legend has it that Chandradev, weakened by the curse of Prajapati Daksha, performed rigorous penance to Lord Shiva at this very spot. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva revived him. This is why the shrine was named "Somnath," meaning "Lord of the Moon."

Architectural Magnificence: A Confluence of Faith and Engineering

The present Somnath Temple is a remarkable example of ancient craftsmanship and modern engineering. The temple spire is approximately 150 feet high, and a 10-ton urn is installed at its top. The 1,666 gold-plated urns within the temple complex further enhance its divinity. A 27-foot-high flagpole is visible from far off to sea level. The temple structure is divided into the sanctum sanctorum, the assembly hall, and the dance hall, the carvings of which offer a vibrant glimpse of Indian culture.

Unique Features of Somnath Dham

The eternal flame burning in the Somnath Temple is considered a symbol of Shiva's eternal form. The temple is built in the Chalukya style of architecture. A Sanskrit inscription on the arrow pillar on the south side states that there is no landmass from this point to the South Pole. Furthermore, bathing in the nearby Kapil Kund is considered highly virtuous.

A Confluence of Faith: Millions of Devotees Every Year

The Somnath Jyotirlinga holds a very special place for Shiva devotees. According to statistics, approximately 9.2 to 9.7 million devotees visit the temple every year to seek the darshan of Lord Somnath. Somnath Swabhiman Parv has become a symbol not only of religious faith but also of India's cultural consciousness, courage and spirit of reconstruction.
