"Somnath is not just a temple, it is a symbol of faith"

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said that this issue transcends politics and is linked to India's identity, self-respect, and future. He reminded that January 6, 2026, marks the 1000th anniversary of the attack on the Somnath Temple. The destruction of the temple by Mahmud of Ghazni in January 1026 is a painful chapter in Indian history, and it is important to remember it to prevent such incidents from recurring.

First among the Twelve Jyotirlingas

The Somnath Temple is considered the first among the twelve Jyotirlingas. According to religious beliefs, merely seeing it destroys sins and bestows virtue. This is why Somnath is considered a symbol of India's soul and eternal tradition.

From Restoration to a Pledge of Prosperity

Referring to May 11, 1951, when the Somnath Temple was restored, the country's first President, Rajendra Prasad, had stated that the complete consecration of Somnath would be considered when India too reached the pinnacle of prosperity. This pledge was realized despite opposition from then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Today, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India is moving rapidly in that direction.
