New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has nominated veteran parliamentarian Harivansh Narayan Singh to the Rajya Sabha. After two consecutive terms, he has been nominated for another six-year term in the Rajya Sabha.
The appointment has been made under Article 80 of the Constitution of India, which empowers the President to nominate individuals with distinguished contributions in fields such as literature, science, art, and social service.
An official notification stated that Harivansh Narayan Singh has been nominated to fill the vacancy arising due to the retirement of a nominated member in the Council of States.
According to the current composition of the 245-member House, the NDA commands a majority with 141 seats. This includes 105 held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), five by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), and four each by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Janata Dal (United), among others.
A senior party leader and former journalist with decades of experience, Harivansh Narayan Singh currently serves as the Deputy Chairperson of the Council of States. His nomination was officially announced early Friday.
Meanwhile, in West Bengal, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) led by Asaduddin Owaisi is contesting seats where the All India Trinamool Congress remains particularly strong.
Approaching 70 this June, Harivansh was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2014. Over the years, he has served on several key committees, including the Standing Committee on Defence, the Select Committee on the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2013, and the Joint Committee on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
He initially held the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha from August 9, 2018, to April 2020. After a brief interval, he resumed the role on September 14, 2020, and continues to serve in that capacity.
