New Delhi: Dr D Y Chandrachud, former Chief Justice of India (CJI), said today on Wednesday that no democracy can exist in the absence of a free and absolutely free press. Therefore, “Press Freedom is the highest value in a democratic society”, he added.

Dr Chandrachud was addressing the young journalists after unveiling the high tech 24x7x365 Samriddhi Studio. The state-of-the-art studio is a high-tech space with live streaming and digital broadcasting facilities. The new studio is equipped to support high-quality live news coverage, interviews, special programmes, digital shows, podcasts and multimedia productions.
Dr Chandrachud said, “There should be Press Freedom, but it does not mean there should be press unfreedom. When the press does not fulfil its responsibility, then it becomes press unfreedom.”

When asked about his advice to young journalists who want to ask questions from the institutions in power while being accurate and ethical, Dr Chandrachud said, “The Right to Question is at the heart of the rule of law in any democratic governance and the Constitution guarantees that right to question.”
On the challenges of fake news, Dr Chandrachud advised young journalists first to differentiate between facts and fake news before disseminating news. “As journalists you should not compromise on the facts for the sake of eyeballs.”

Earlier, Dynamite News Founder and Editor-in-Chief Manoj Tibrewal Aakash and Chairperson Rani Tibrewal warmly welcomed former Chief Justice of India Dr D Y Chandrachud as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of Samriddhi Studio.

Expressing confidence in the organisation, Dr Chandrachud said he was certain that Dynamite News would continue to live up to those expectations while advancing steadily on the path of growth and excellence in journalism.
M Nagaraju, a senior IAS officer of the 1993 batch, said that audiences today expect news to be delivered instantly, in a brief, clear and precise manner, without unnecessary sensationalism. He observed that the younger generation is more informed and self-aware and therefore prefers quick news updates that convey essential information without lengthy or excessive analysis.

He further said that as news becomes faster and more concise, journalists must remain completely faithful to the facts. Young journalists should continuously improve their writing and reporting skills so that they can communicate accurate information briefly, clearly and responsibly, he added.
