Indira Gandhi: From India's First Woman Prime Minister to a Defining Political Figure

Born on November 19, 1917, Indira Gandhi was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. She became the country's first woman Prime Minister in January 1966 and held office until 1977. She returned to power in 1980 and served until her assassination on October 31, 1984.

Her political career spanned several defining phases of India's post-independence history. Her tenure witnessed major policy decisions, including the nationalisation of 14 major commercial banks in 1969, initiatives linked to poverty alleviation, developments in agricultural production and the expansion of India's scientific and strategic capabilities.

Her government also supported the development of India's space and nuclear programmes, contributing to the country's growing technological and strategic infrastructure. The Garibi Hatao campaign became one of the defining political themes of her leadership, placing poverty reduction and welfare-oriented governance at the centre of the political agenda.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her bodyguards at her official residence in New Delhi on October 31, 1984. Her death anniversary is observed annually in remembrance of her political journey, contribution to the country and the circumstances surrounding her assassination.

On her 42nd death anniversary, tributes from Congress leaders, elected representatives and members of the Gandhi family once again brought the spotlight on Indira Gandhi's complex and consequential political legacy, which remains a significant chapter in India's post-independence history.
