New Delhi: There's good news for train passengers. Indian Railways has made free Wi-Fi service available at 6,117 railway stations across the country as part of its efforts to promote digital facilities. Importantly, the Ministry of Railways did not allocate any additional budget for this facility; the service was launched using existing resources.
In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Railways stated that both the digital and security infrastructure are being continuously strengthened to provide better facilities and a safer travel experience for railway passengers. The free Wi-Fi service at railway stations has been launched under existing resources and a partnership model.
The aim is to provide internet access to passengers while they wait and to strengthen the Digital India campaign. A large number of passengers are now easily availing of this facility for ticket booking, travel-related information, and other online services at the stations.
The Ministry clarified that to use Wi-Fi at railway stations, passengers need to enter an OTP (One-Time Password) via their mobile number. No other personal information, such as identity cards or email IDs, is requested.
This system ensures the privacy and data security of passengers. If there is a technical problem with the Wi-Fi service at any station, the railway administration takes immediate action to rectify it. The objective is to ensure that passengers receive uninterrupted internet service.
CCTV Cameras Installed at 1,731 Railway Stations and 11,953 Coaches
In response to another question, the Ministry of Railways informed Parliament that the CCTV network is being rapidly expanded at stations and in coaches to strengthen the security of railway passengers. So far, CCTV cameras have been installed at 1,731 railway stations and in 11,953 coaches across the country. These cameras have been installed under capital expenditure and are playing a significant role in further strengthening the security system for passengers.
New Delhi Railway Station, one of the country's busiest railway stations, already had CCTV cameras installed for security in areas such as entry and exit points, foot overbridges, platforms, waiting halls, and ticket counters. However, in view of the new areas developed within the station premises after February 15, 2025, additional cameras have also been installed. Currently, a total of 250 CCTV cameras are operational at New Delhi Railway Station.
