Supreme Court to hear pleas seeking FIR, SIT probe against Assam CM on 16 Feb

The Supreme Court is set to hear on February 16 a batch of petitions seeking registration of an FIR and a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over alleged hate speech remarks, including comments on “Miya Muslims” and a controversial “point blank” video.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi will hear the matter. The pleas contend that the Chief Minister’s statements and a now-deleted video posted on social media allegedly depicted him firing at individuals appearing to belong to the Muslim community, triggering public backlash.

Petitions have been filed by leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India, as well as four prominent Assamese citizens, who allege repeated speeches targeting Bengali-origin Muslims in Assam and call for an independent probe, arguing that state and central agencies may not conduct an impartial investigation.
