Bhubaneswar: The low pressure in the Bay of Bengal is now developing into a depression. It is expected that this system will intensify into Cyclone Montha by the evening of October 28th and will make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh that night.

According to the Meteorological Department, Cyclone Montha is expected to make landfall between the evening and night of October 28th.

Meteorological Department said, although this cyclone will not directly impact Odisha, its impact could cause heavy rainfall in the state until October 30th.

Employees’ Leave Cancelled
According to sources, in view of the potential cyclone, the state government has cancelled the leave of government employees in Kalahandi and Gajapati districts on October 27, 28, and 29. Bathing has been banned for three days at Puri beach, keeping tourists’ safety in mind.

Fishermen have been instructed not to venture into the sea starting Sunday. Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari’s tour program has also been cancelled, and his office has been converted into a control room.

According to the Regional Meteorological Center, the cyclone will cause heavy rainfall in Odisha. Heavy rain is expected in coastal and southern Odisha from October 27 to 29. Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, and Gajapati districts will be most affected.

Heavy Rainfall Expected
Light to moderate rainfall is expected in these areas, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds of 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph, are expected on the 28th and 29th. The weather will improve from October 30th.

The Indian Meteorological Department has also issued a warning regarding this potential cyclone. According to the department, the low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal will first intensify into a deep depression, then a cyclone, and later into a severe cyclone.

This storm is expected to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, on the evening or night of October 28th.

According to the bulletin from the Regional Meteorological Center in Chennai, this depression is expected to move west-northwestward and intensify into a cyclone over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal by October 27th. It is expected to become a severe cyclone by the morning of October 28th.

According to the Meteorological Department, wind speeds could reach 90 to 100 kmph during this period. This could cause heavy rainfall in Thiruvallur, Chennai, Ranipet, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Viluppuram districts.

Lightning and thunderstorms are also possible during this period. Fishermen in coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have been strictly warned not to venture into the sea.

Chennai and surrounding areas will remain cloudy, with light to moderate rainfall expected. Ooty (Tirunelveli) recorded the highest rainfall of 14 cm in the last 24 hours, while Tirupuvanam (Sivaganga) received the lowest rainfall of 1 cm. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next 24 hours.

According to a spokesperson at the East Headquarters of the India Meteorological Department, light rainfall is expected in the southern districts of West Bengal from October 27. On October 27, light rain with thundershowers is likely in South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, East and West Midnapore districts.

On October 28, moderate rain is likely in many areas, while heavy rain (7–11 cm) is likely at some places in South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore. On October 29, thunderstorms and heavy rain are likely in many districts including Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas. On October 30, heavy rain is likely in Birbhum, Murshidabad and West Bardhaman districts.
