New Delhi: The Central Government has appointed retired Supreme Court Judge BS Chauhan to investigate the violence that occurred in Leh on 24 September. This step has been taken in view of the serious consequences of the events of that day, in which four people died as a result of police action.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the objective of the judicial inquiry is to ascertain why the serious law and order situation arose in Leh on 24 September and how the police responded during that time. Furthermore, it will also investigate how the four individuals died during the violence and the circumstances under which the incident occurred.

Former Supreme Court Judge BS Chauhan will conduct this investigation impartially. The Ministry also clarified that this investigation will be completely impartial, ensuring justice for all parties and revealing the full picture of the incident.
On 24 September, a major clash broke out between security forces and protesters in Leh. The protesters demanded statehood for Leh and special rights under the Sixth Schedule. Four people were killed and approximately 90 injured as the protests escalated into violence.
Following the violence, police arrested several individuals, including prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. Wangchuk was charged with inciting violence and arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) and sent to Jodhpur jail.
The government confirmed its readiness for dialogue at any time. It is open to dialogue with Leh leaders and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) through a high-level committee or other platforms. The government stated that continued dialogue will yield positive results soon and that it is committed to the aspirations of the people of Leh.
This is a clear message from the government that it will not only take the investigation into this violence seriously, but is also ready to promote a process of dialogue and consensus to address any future situation.
