Right to Disconnect Bill tabled; Employees may legally ignore after-hours calls

New Delhi: Friday in Parliament was marked by the introduction of several private member bills. Among them, the ‘Right to Disconnect Bill 2025,’ introduced by Supriya Sule, garnered the most attention. This bill aims to free working professionals from the pressure of calls and emails that bother them even after working hours. Given the ever-increasing expectation of constant ‘online availability’ in the digital age, this bill holds particular significance.

What is the Right to Disconnect Bill?

NCP MP Supriya Sule has proposed the creation of an ‘Employee Welfare Authority’ under this bill. This authority would ensure that employees have the right to refrain from responding to office emails, messages, or calls after working hours and during holidays.

If the bill is passed, employees will be able to ignore phone calls and emails received after office hours and will be free from any penalties or pressure associated with doing so. This bill could bring particular relief to employees who constantly struggle with ‘work-life balance’ issues.

The Process of a Private Member Bill

This bill has been introduced as a private member bill. Such bills are introduced in Parliament by individual MPs with the aim of drawing the government's attention to a new or important law. However, private member bills generally have a low chance of being passed, as they are usually withdrawn after discussion.

Demand for Paid Menstrual Leave for Women

During the session, two separate bills were also introduced on important issues related to women.
Congress MP Kadiyam Kavya introduced the ‘Menstrual Benefits Bill 2024,’ which proposes providing special facilities to women in the workplace during menstruation.
