New Delhi: An oil tanker that departed from Russia's Primorsk port bound for China has suddenly altered its route and is now heading toward India. Named Aqua Titan, the vessel—carrying approximately 110,000 tons of crude oil—is expected to arrive at the New Mangalore Port by March 20.

Why This Case Is Significant

Typically, ships do not change their routes mid-voyage; however, this tanker is believed to be part of a "Dark Fleet"—a network linked to Russia that faces sanctions from several nations. Consequently, its sudden U-turn has become a subject of intense discussion.

Impact of US Policy

According to reports, the United States had granted India a 30-day exemption for the import of Russian oil. It was shortly after this decision—in mid-March—that the vessel changed its course to head toward India.

Why Oil Imports Are Crucial for India

India imports a significant portion of its energy requirements. Refinery plants, such as Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), require massive quantities of crude oil on a monthly basis. The arrival of this tanker is expected to bolster the country's oil supply.

Supplies from Saudi Arabia Continue

It is not just Russia; oil is also being imported into India from Saudi Arabia. Tankers are now being rerouted to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, instead traveling via the Yanbu port in the Red Sea to ensure security and safety.

Impact of Rising Tensions

Ongoing tensions in the Middle East, coupled with the geopolitical situation involving Iran, have disrupted oil supply chains. As a result, India is actively exploring alternative routes and sources for its energy needs.

Relief at the Port

The New Mangalore Port has waived certain fees for oil and LPG tankers, a measure designed to make imports easier and more cost-effective.
