Srinagar: A rusted mortar shell, believed to have remained unexploded for several decades, was discovered near a canal in Jammu's Kanachak area. The suspicious object was subsequently defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS), officials said.

The recovery was reported from Kinare Panjore, where a local resident spotted what appeared to be an old 51-mm mortar shell near a canal, locally known as a nehar. The resident promptly informed the Kanachak Police Station about the potentially dangerous object.

Police and Bomb Squad Respond Immediately

Following the information, police alerted the Bomb Disposal Squad, which rushed to the location to examine the suspicious item. After reaching the site, the team took the necessary precautions and successfully neutralised the mortar shell. Officials confirmed that the explosive was safely defused.

The prompt alert from the local resident and the swift response by the police and bomb disposal personnel helped prevent any potential danger to people in the surrounding area.

Authorities Warn People Against Touching Suspicious Objects

The recovery has highlighted the risks posed by old and unexploded ammunition that may remain hidden in public areas for years. Rusted shells and other explosive remnants can still be dangerous despite their age and deteriorated appearance.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious if they come across objects resembling ammunition, explosives or military equipment.

People have specifically been advised not to touch, move, inspect or approach such suspicious items. Instead, they should immediately inform the nearest police station and allow trained personnel to handle the situation.

Officials have stressed that timely reporting and public awareness are essential to preventing accidents involving unexploded explosives.
