SC seeks information from EC over 65 lakh voters removed in Bihar

The Election Commission started ‘Special Intensive Revision Campaign (SIR)’ in Bihar on June 24. Under this, a draft voter list was released on August 1, showing 7.24 crore voters. But the names of more than 65 lakh voters were removed from it. The Election Commission says that these people have either died, have moved to another place permanently, or the name was in two places.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Election Commission (EC) to submit the complete details of about 65 lakh voters removed from the draft voter list of Bihar by August 9. The court also said that this information should be given to those political parties as well as the NGO named Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), which has filed a petition on this issue.

What is the matter?

The Election Commission started 'Special Intensive Revision Campaign (SIR)' in Bihar on June 24. Under this, a draft voter list was released on August 1, showing 7.24 crore voters. What happened during the hearing in the court?

Justice Suryakant, Ujjwal Bhuyan and N. Kotishwar Singh's bench told the Election Commission, 'We need information about every voter whose name has been removed. See on what basis the names have been removed.' On the other hand, lawyer Prashant Bhushan on behalf of the NGO said, 'The list of removed voters has been given to the political parties, but it does not tell who has died, who has shifted, or whose name has been removed wrongly.'
