Sonam Wangchuk Breaks 26-Day Fast at Medanta, PM Modi Promises Stricter Action on Paper Leaks

New Delhi: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk on Thursday night ended his 26-day indefinite hunger strike at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after discussions with the Central government. Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh were present when Wangchuk concluded his fast, along with senior representatives of the Apex Body of Leh Ladakh.

Wangchuk Says Decision Followed Discussions

Announcing the development on social media, Wangchuk said the decision came after extensive discussions on several conditions. He also acknowledged support from Members of Parliament across party lines, stating that many had urged him to end the fast. Stressing the need for peace, he appealed to people across the country to avoid violence and said he would soon share details of the discussions in a separate video.

PM Modi Announces Tougher Measures

The breakthrough came hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government was preparing stronger legal measures to tackle paper leak cases. According to the Prime Minister, a draft proposal introducing fast-track courts and stricter punishment for those involved in examination fraud would be placed before the Union Cabinet. He also noted that several accused had already been arrested and that fresh examinations had been conducted promptly for affected candidates.

After Wangchuk ended his fast, PM Modi wished him a speedy recovery and urged him to follow doctors' advice to regain his health.

Protests to Continue

Reacting to the development, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke welcomed Wangchuk's decision, describing his fast as a significant moral stand. However, he said the organisation's peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar would continue, reiterating its demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The agitation over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, which impacted more than 22 lakh aspirants, has continued in the national capital, with organisers also calling for peaceful demonstrations across districts on July 24.
