Udhampur: A violent gunfight broke out on Monday evening in a remote forest village in Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the death of a policeman and injuries to a terrorist, officials said. The encounter occurred in the village of Soan in the Majalta area, prompting a massive security response.

Encounter Erupts Following Intelligence Input

According to the Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Bhim Sen Tuti, security forces received precise intelligence about the presence of three terrorists, believed to be affiliated with the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit, in the remote village.

Acting on the information, a joint team comprising the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the police, the Army, and CRPF launched a search operation, establishing contact with the militants around 6 pm.

Casualties and Current Situation

The initial gunfire left one SOG personnel injured, who later succumbed to his injuries. Officials also confirmed that one of the terrorists was believed to have been injured during the exchange. The encounter temporarily ceased as night fell, but the area has been placed under a tight security cordon, and all escape routes have been blocked to prevent the terrorists from fleeing.

Challenging Terrain Hampers Operations

The IGP noted that the small SOG team engaged the terrorists under difficult conditions. The dense forest and treacherous terrain, coupled with darkness, have hindered the thorough combing of the area. Reinforcements have been deployed to strengthen the cordon, and security forces plan to resume operations at first light on Tuesday to neutralize the remaining militants.

Ongoing Security Efforts

The authorities emphasized that joint efforts by the police, SOG, CRPF, and Army are ongoing to ensure that the militants do not escape. The operation underscores the continuing threat posed by terrorist outfits in the region and the challenges faced by security forces in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that civilians in the surrounding areas remain safe while the operation progresses. Further updates are expected once the security forces complete the planned operations at daybreak.
