Protest Over Iduvai Garbage Dump Sparks Flashpoint
Chennai: A tense situation unfolded in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, after a protest was announced near Kumaran Murthy against the alleged dumping of Tirupur’s garbage in the green town of Iduvai. The protest was led by senior BJP leader K. Annamalai, who arrived at the spot to participate.
Soon after his arrival, the police detained Annamalai from the Kumaran Murthy area, triggering outrage among BJP supporters and local residents. The detention followed the arrest of several protestors earlier in connection with the Iduvai waste dumping case.
Iduvai, described by locals as a small, green, and peaceful town, has reportedly become a dumping ground for Tirupur’s waste. Residents allege that water bodies have been polluted, the environment degraded, and public health put at risk. The issue has grown into a major environmental and civic concern.
Before being taken into custody, Annamalai accused the DMK government and the Tirupur Corporation of suppressing democratic protests. He alleged that garbage dumping was being carried out against public will and claimed that BJP workers, including district leaders, were being targeted for opposing it.
Annamalai’s Detention Sparks Tension in Tirupur
Annamalai stated that cities like Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Tirupur rank poorly in cleanliness and accused the DMK-led administration of turning Tirupur into a garbage hub for political and financial gains. He asserted that the ultimate solution lies in the ballot box and called on people to vote out the “anti-people” government.
Warning of intensified agitation, Annamalai said that public protests would continue in various forms starting the next day. He emphasized that neither arrests nor intimidation would silence the voices of the people of Iduvai.
