SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accuses BJP of deleting voters through SIR in Uttar Pradesh. He claims nearly three crore names may be removed, calls it linked to NRC, questions Aadhaar exclusion, and warns it threatens free and fair elections.
Akhilesh Questions Urgency Behind SIR, Blames BJP
New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the voter list in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav has leveled serious allegations.
He claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is deliberately removing voters' names from the list in areas where it loses elections. According to Akhilesh Yadav, preparations are underway to remove the names of approximately three crore voters across Uttar Pradesh, which he called extremely worrying for democracy.
Akhilesh Yadav said that in the Lok Sabha constituency from which he himself was elected, the names of more than two lakh voters are being removed.
He stated that in the neighboring district of Farrukhabad, which has been a Samajwadi Party stronghold, approximately two to two and a half lakh votes are also being removed.

He argued that if two to three lakh votes are removed from a single parliamentary constituency, it will be difficult to imagine a fair election.
The SP chief alleged that the SIR process is not being conducted to add votes, but rather to remove them. He said that elections will only be fair when every citizen has the right to vote.
He stated that it is the Election Commission's responsibility to ensure that the names of all eligible voters are included in the voter list, but the current process is working in the opposite direction.
Akhilesh Yadav also alleged that the work the government could not accomplish through the NRC (National Register of Citizens) is now being done through SIR. He said that through SIR, citizens are being brought under suspicion, which is a dangerous sign for the democratic system.
Referring to Bihar, he said that when SIR was implemented there, all political parties opposed it, and the matter reached the Supreme Court. After the court's directives, the Election Commission had to accept some points, but despite this, votes were removed on a large scale because the data was already available at the booth level.
Akhilesh Yadav questioned why, when Aadhaar cards contain retina scans, fingerprints, and complete biometric data, they are not being linked to the voter list.
They say that if Aadhaar is linked to the voter list, people will be spared the hassle of filling out forms, searching for documents, and undergoing repeated verification.
The SP chief also raised questions about the construction of detention centers. He asked why detention centers are being built when the Election Commission says that only the voter list is being revised. According to him, this clearly indicates that the NRC process is also secretly underway alongside the SIR (State Register of Citizens).
