Lucknow: The severe cold and dense fog gripping North India are also affecting Uttar Pradesh. Life across the state has been disrupted due to the cold winds from the mountains and snowfall. The Meteorological Department has predicted that there will be no relief from the biting cold and fog for the next three days. Cold day conditions prevail, particularly in western and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Schools and Daily Life Affected

Due to the cold and fog, the UP government has closed all schools up to class 12 until January 1st. All schools affiliated with ICSE, CBSE, and the UP Board will remain closed. The sun remained hidden behind clouds and fog throughout the day, resulting in near-zero visibility in many districts. Visibility was recorded as zero in Agra, Prayagraj, Kanpur, and Saharanpur, 10 meters in Fatehpur, 15 meters in Meerut, and 20 meters in Hamirpur.

13-Year Cold Record Broken in Meerut

The minimum temperature in Meerut was recorded at 6.7 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was recorded at 16.6 degrees, the lowest in the last 13 years. At this time, Meerut was even colder than Nainital. Daily life has been affected by the cold, and people are resorting to bonfires, heaters, and warm clothing. The elderly, children, and daily wage laborers are particularly suffering.

Impact of Pollution

Along with the cold, pollution has also added to people's difficulties. In the NCR region, the Air Quality Index (AQI) on Delhi Road was recorded at 342 on Sunday, while the AQI in Meerut was 298. The highest pollution level was recorded in Jaibhim Nagar at 355.

Orange Alert Districts

An orange alert for dense fog has been issued for Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Kanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Agra, Etawah, Bijnor, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, and surrounding districts.

Safety and Warnings

The Meteorological Department has appealed to people to exercise caution while driving, reduce speed, and keep headlights on low beam. Avoid unnecessary travel during foggy conditions, and if necessary, stop your vehicle in a safe place and keep the lights on. Wear warm clothes indoors and take all necessary precautions to protect yourself from the cold.
