Over 2.89 crore names are set to be removed from UP’s voter list under a massive SIR drive, while 1.11 crore voters face document checks. Who is being dropped, why now, and what does it mean for UP Elections 2027?
1.11 crore voters will receive notices seeking document verification
Lucknow: Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Election Commission has undertaken a large-scale voter verification exercise under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. As part of this drive, nearly 2.89 crore voters are set to be removed from the state’s electoral rolls, while 1.11 crore voters will receive notices seeking document verification.
The exercise is aimed at ensuring a transparent, accurate, and fair electoral process ahead of the UP Elections 2027.
According to the Election Commission, the provisional voter list will be published on December 31. Voters will be allowed to submit claims and objections from December 31 to January 30, 2026. These claims will be examined and disposed of by February 21, 2026, after which the final voter list will be released on February 28, 2026.

Election officials stated that the names being removed fall under several verified categories. Of the 2.89 crore voters slated for deletion:
1.26 crore voters were found to have migrated to other locations
46 lakh voters were confirmed deceased
23.70 lakh voters were duplicate registrations
83.73 lakh voters were marked absent during verification
9.57 lakh voters fell under other ineligible categories
These deletions were carried out following extensive field-level verification.
In addition to deletions, the Election Commission will issue notices to 1.11 crore voters, asking them to submit valid identity documents to retain their voter registration. Voters must submit any one of the 13 documents approved by the Commission. Failure to provide valid documentation could result in removal from the voter list.
To ensure accuracy, Booth Level Officers (BLOs), assisted by political party representatives, conducted door-to-door verification across the state. The process focused on identifying deceased voters, migrants, and duplicate entries, with verification lists prepared at every polling booth.

The Election Commission has also completed voter list mapping, matching 91% of current voters with the 2003 electoral rolls. Voter identities were verified using parental and grandparental records to enhance accuracy.
Amid concerns that some names may have been removed due to technical errors, the Election Commission assured voters that the claims and objections mechanism would protect genuine voters. Officials stated that strict action would be taken in cases of negligence.
The Commission reiterated that the SIR process is a crucial step toward strengthening electoral integrity and democratic participation in Uttar Pradesh.
