New Delhi: A religious ceremony in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district turned into a health emergency after 62 people reportedly fell sick following the distribution of prasad during a Satyanarayan Katha event. The gathering was held on Friday night in Simuapur village at the residence of Munna Lal Kashyap.

Devotees had gathered in large numbers for the ritual, which concluded with the distribution of prasad among participants.

Prasad consumption linked to health complaints

According to the information shared by officials, the prasad included items such as panchamrit and panjiri. Several hours after consuming the offerings, multiple attendees began experiencing symptoms including stomach pain, vomiting, weakness, and discomfort during the night.

As more people reported similar issues, concern spread quickly through the village, prompting families to seek medical help.

Patients rushed to hospitals for treatment

Initially, those affected were taken to nearby private clinics for immediate attention. However, as the number of patients continued to rise, all 62 individuals were later shifted to the district hospital for better treatment and monitoring.

Health officials stated that the condition of all patients is currently stable. Medical teams are continuing to observe them while investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of illness.

Authorities are examining whether the prasad served during the ceremony may have been contaminated or improperly prepared.

Investigation underway into the cause

Local administration has begun a detailed inquiry into food handling and distribution at the event. Samples of the consumed items are expected to be examined to rule out any contamination or hygiene-related issues.

Officials have not ruled out any possibility at this stage and are awaiting laboratory results before drawing conclusions.

Similar incidents raise concerns

This is not the first such case reported in recent months. Earlier, nearly 60 people fell ill during Ram Navami celebrations in the Bengaluru Rural district after consuming temple prasad. That incident also triggered a detailed food safety investigation.

Health authorities say such repeated episodes highlight the need for stricter hygiene standards during large religious gatherings where food is distributed to devotees.
