New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for cold wave and dense fog conditions across several parts of the country starting December 9, with minimum temperatures expected to drop in northwest India and other regions.

Residents are advised to take precautions as the chilly spell is likely to intensify over the coming days.

Cold Wave Conditions to Affect Central, Eastern, and Northern India

Cold wave conditions are forecast over central, eastern, and northern Peninsular India from December 9 to 12. The IMD has highlighted that Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha will experience significant cold wave conditions during this period. Punjab is expected to be affected from December 10 to 12, while Vidarbha and Telangana may experience similar weather on December 9 and 10.

Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, north Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada are likely to witness cold waves on December 11 and 12.

Dense Fog Predicted in Isolated Regions

Dense fog is expected during early morning hours in isolated pockets of Assam and Manipur from December 9 to 13. Additionally, East Uttar Pradesh and Odisha are likely to experience foggy conditions on December 9 and 10, which may disrupt travel and transport in these regions.

Weather Systems Driving the Chill

The current weather pattern is influenced by an upper air cyclonic circulation over east Bangladesh, a Western Disturbance over north Pakistan, and a trough along the southeast Bay of Bengal. The Subtropical Westerly Jet Stream remains active over northeast India with core winds reaching up to 115 knots.

Furthermore, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to impact the western Himalayan region from December 13. Meanwhile, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from December 8 to 10.

Temperature Trends Across India

In the past 24 hours, minimum temperatures fell below 5°C in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and parts of Himachal Pradesh. The plains saw the lowest temperatures at 4.5°C in Faridkot and Gurdaspur in Punjab. Parts of west Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh recorded temperatures significantly below normal.

A slight rise of 1-2°C is expected in northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, and Gangetic West Bengal, while Gujarat and parts of northeast and north Peninsular India may see a fall of 1-2°C.

Residents are urged to stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe during this cold wave spell.
