New Delhi: World Population Day is being celebrated around the globe today on 11 July. The theme this year is "Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world", reports Dynamite News correspondent.
This day is to focus global attention on one of the major issues faced by human society – the rapidly growing population.
According to the United Nations, the world population has crossed 8.1 billion (2025) and it is estimated that this will increase and may reach 9.7 billion by 2050 and 10.4 billion in the 2080s. This growing population is going to gives us a serious impact on resources, environment and social infrastructure.
World Population Day started in 1989 by the United Nations Development programme (UNDP). It was a motivation taken by July 11, 1987, when the world's population reached 5 billion and this day is known as "Five Billion Day "and after this population related issues are discussed globally

Bringing this idea to life, World Population Day was officially celebrated for the first time in 1990 in more than 90 countries. After this, the United Nations General Assembly decided in December 1990 to celebrate July 11 as World Population Day every year.
World Population Day does not only talk about quantity, but it also aims to the social, economic and environmental effects that are due to population growth. The growing population directly proportional to the demand for primary commodities like food, water, energy, the pressure on health services, education and employment opportunities decreases, and natural resources are overexploited.
Experts believe that if concrete steps are not taken in time in areas like population control, access to reproductive health services, and gender equality, then the coming decades can be full of challenges for the world.
India, which has now become the world's most populous country by leaving China behind, faces an even bigger challenge. There is a need for policies focused on population control, education and women's awareness.
This is a crucial moment to confront our increasing population- now over 8.1 billion, and this day tells to focus on sustainable growth.
