New Delhi: The month of Shravan or Sawan is considered very virtuous and sacred in Hinduism. This month is especially dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. In 2025, Sawan has started in North India from July 11 and it will continue till August 9. In this one month, lakhs of Shiva devotees observes fast, offer water to Shivling and perform special worship in temples.
However in this holy month, there are some such works which should not be done even by mistake, otherwise the worship may remain incomplete or there may be obstacles in life.

Do not consume meat and alcohol: Consumption of non-vegetarian food and alcohol is completely prohibited in the month of Sawan. It is not only spiritually improper, but also affects the body and mind.
Avoid stale and heavy food: It is advisable to eat fresh and sattvik food in this month. Stale, fried or too spicy food can give rise to diseases.
Do not consume leafy vegetables: According to Ayurveda, leafy vegetables such as spinach, fenugreek, mustard etc. are likely to have germs in Sawan. Therefore, avoid them.

Do not take non-vegetarian or acidic things with milk: Offering milk to Lord Shiva is considered auspicious, but during this time, unlimited or improper use of milk can cause doshas.
Staying awake till late at night and not getting up in Brahmamuhurta: The month of Sawan is of sadhana and restraint. Staying awake till late night and getting up late in the morning reduces the effect of this month.
Do not argue and speak harsh words: Anger, lies, abusive words and arguing with someone in this month reduces virtue and increases mental unrest.
Do not offer Tulsi (Holi Basil) leaves on Shivling: Tulsi (Holi Basil) leaves are not offered to Lord Shiva, it is considered inauspicious from religious point of view.
Worshiping Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan removes all obstacles in life. Especially Sawan Monday fast, Rudrabhishek, chanting mantras and offering milk, Belpatra, Dhatura etc. brings Shiva's blessings. This month is an opportunity for self-purification and spiritual upliftment.
